Bukayo Saka is facing time out of the Arsenal side after picking up a quadriceps injury during the club's 2-2 Champions League draw with Bayern Munich, according to Sky Sports. The winger came off in the 10th minute at the Allianz Arena after feeling what Sky Sports describes as a sharp pain when he swung his left boot. Mikel Arteta gave a downbeat assessment afterwards, saying the club's medical staff were concerned and that the problem did not look good at all.
Sky Sports reports that Saka was seen limping as he left the stadium. The setback adds to a run of fitness problems for a player who was rarely missing between 2020/21 and 2023/24 but has since had trouble with hamstring, Achilles and hip complaints.
Why it matters
Arsenal's results have dipped noticeably whenever Saka has not started. According to Sky Sports, the club's Premier League win rate stands at 64.2 per cent in matches he has started since he became a regular in 2020/21, compared with 53.3 per cent when he has been absent. The gap was wider still last season, when Arsenal won 76 per cent of their games with him in the starting line-up and 53.8 per cent without him.
The numbers go beyond results. Sky Sports notes that Arsenal take more shots and score more goals per game when Saka plays. He is the team's leading Premier League scorer this season with three goals and leads the squad for shots, touches in the opposition box and expected goals. The underlying figures suggest he is posing more of a scoring threat than at any previous point, and Gradient Sports' grading system places him as the Premier League's best-performing player for execution this season, ahead of Elliot Anderson. He also tops Arsenal's tackling numbers, which Sky Sports highlights as evidence of his contribution without the ball.
A thin attack gets thinner
The timing is awkward because Arteta's forward options were already stretched. Christos Tzolis, a summer arrival, was described last week as being weeks away from a return from a thigh problem, per Sky Sports. The club also fell short in attempts to sign Vinicius Jr and Julian Alvarez during the summer window, leaving the frontline lighter than intended.
Against Bayern, Eberechi Eze replaced Saka, but Eze's strongest contribution came from the left, with Noni Madueke moving across to fill the right-sided role. Madueke had started at the Allianz Arena after impressing on the left in wins over Leeds and Nottingham Forest, including scoring the winner from the bench against Forest. Sky Sports points out that the right is his natural flank, where he can drift inside onto his left foot, and he adapted well in Munich, playing a key part in Declan Rice's equaliser with a first-time pass to Viktor Gyokeres.
Madueke brings more outright pace and a more direct style than Saka, but Sky Sports judges him considerably less dependable on the ball, with an end product that has at times frustrated Arsenal supporters. In the Lille match he delivered 14 unsuccessful crosses before setting up Jurrien Timber's opener, while Saka needed just one touch after coming on to create Eze's second goal. Arteta, however, places value on the sheer number of attacking actions Madueke produces. After the Lille game, the manager said that being clinical sometimes means scoring five in every 100, and that the aim is to generate volume, get him into good positions, and trust him to decide matches.
Eze can also operate on the right, but Sky Sports reports that his only Premier League minutes there under Arteta have come as a right-sided No 8 rather than a winger. With Tzolis out, he may be required on the left instead, where Arteta praised his all-round display against Bayern, including his work off the ball.
Dowman's opening
That leaves Max Dowman as Arsenal's only other natural wide option on the night in Munich. The 16-year-old is regarded as a full member of the first-team squad and has already made history. Sky Sports recalls that he became Arsenal's youngest starter against Brighton in the Carabao Cup last October at 15 years and 302 days, then became the Premier League's youngest scorer with a breakaway goal at Everton in March at 16 years and 73 days. In September he scored twice against Ipswich in the Carabao Cup, a feat matched at that age for a Premier League club only by Wayne Rooney.
Those displays led to calls for more league involvement, but Arteta has been careful. Dowman, who picked up a minor injury while with England's U19s, has played just nine Premier League minutes so far. Arteta said the youngster will get his chance and his minutes, but that he will have to earn them like everyone else.
Everton, Saturday's visitors, know his threat firsthand. Arsenal's forthcoming Carabao Cup and Champions League fixtures against Fleetwood Town and Slavia Prague could also offer openings. Sky Sports notes that Saka's recent form had drawn scrutiny, with quieter showings in league wins over Nottingham Forest and Leeds, though he contributed a goal and an assist from the bench against Lille last week.
Attention now turns to how long Saka is expected to be out and whether Arteta hands Dowman a meaningful league role or keeps leaning on Madueke and Eze.
